Matthew Jones to join Worcester

Apparently an announcement is expected. The BBC had this to say (at the bottom of the page).

"Worcester are also expected to confirm the signing of former Wales and Ospreys fly-half Matthew Jones in the next few days.  He has been playing in National One for London Welsh and Moseley since leaving South Wales, and ended last season as top scorer for both clubs. "

Good to see him going back up the leagues. He looked fairly decent for the Ospreys a few years ago, even managed to get capped in the 2005 american tour under Ruddock.

Fingers crossed for the lad, just hope he gets some first team rugby there.

Jones, who has played the season with Moseley and London Welsh, is expected to leave Old Deer Park and with Warriors desperate to replace Shane Drahm, may be handed a route back into top flight rugby.

The 24-year-old made his name for Ospreys but has struggled following a knee injury in August 2006 and although he made a few appearances at the end of 2006-07, he was unable to force his way past Shaun Connor and James Hook.

Last term, he signed a six-month loan with Moseley but the deal was cancelled at halfway, after which he spent a few games with Bridgend. Lon-don Welsh came calling a month later and he ended as both clubs' leading league scorer, with 106 for the Exiles and 75 for Moseley.

Caerphilly 13-36 Neath

A professional performance from Neath saw them outclass Caerphilly in the Konica Minolta Cup final in Cardiff.

First-half tries from Kevin James and Andrew Howell gave the All Blacks the advantage, and two sin binnings either side of the break cost the Cheesemen.

Their tiring defence let in second-half tries from James, Mike Jones and fly-half Matthew Jones, who contributed 16 points in all. Caerphilly never looked like denying Neath their fourth Welsh Cup triumph.

"That was great, my first experience of a game like this," said man-of-the-match Matthew Jones.

"The hard work put in by the boys throughout the season has paid off."

London Welsh are up into the top hall of the table after this home win over Plymouth Albion with most of the damage done in the first half.    Matt Jones got them on the board after four minutes with a drop goal and 10 minutes later it was 10-0 as on loan wing Noah Cato went over for a try on his debut and Jones converted. On 23 minutes it was 17-0 with centre Paul Mackay going over and Jones again on target. Ross Laidlaw got the visitors on the board in the opening minute of the second half with a penalty goal but before the hour mark the home side had a third try as their other winger Michael Tagicakibau went over and it was 22-3. Just after the hour mark Albion got their only try of the day with right wing Ed Lewsey going over and Laidlaw converted. The Welsh could not add a fourth try for the bonus point and had to settle for the win.

Forgotten one cap wonder and Osprey fly-half Matt Jones is poised to make a return to top-flight rugby with Guinness Premiership side Worcester, and in doing so be reunited with the man who gave him that cap, Mike Ruddock.  Ending up at London Welsh has tended to signal the end of any Welsh players hopes of playing in either the Magners League or Guinness Premiership, but Jones appears to have salvaged a career that following his release from the Ospreys earlier this year, looked likely to be spent scrapping around the semi-professional leagues.

Fellow former Osprey Richie Pugh has ended up in England too, with ambitious Devonian National league one side Exeter, but Jones will face a far tougher test adapting to the intensity of the Guinness Premiership, which could arguably be better for his international prospects than being back in Wales.  Cynically though without the Ruddock connection it is questionable if the Neath- product would have been given this opportunity, but the former Wales coach has proved both at Newport Gwent Dragons and in Worcester his player-recruitment is normally spot-on.
