The Paul Westmacot Report The Andy Keast Interview
The 23rd game of the season, would it be the 23rd straight win??

This was the game we had the most concerns about from the day the fixtures were released. Mind you the early form of Exeter would lead you to believe this was now an easy fixture. However since late November Exeter had got stronger and better game after game. In the last two games they had scored 139 and conceded only 6. This was going to be a very tough fixture. Deep in the Chief's lair

Two form sides took the field, as both sets of fans screamed their full support. Well done the travelling support 1 : 0

Tony Yapp, got the game underway. With a gale force win at their backs the Chiefs stormed forward deep into Indian Warriors territory. The ball was too deep, but once again a loss of grip and a slide allowed the Chiefs to hit the Warriors almost on their 22.

However, the warriors instantly regrouped and slowly but firmly worked their way out of trouble. No panic, just calm focussed determined actions.

The chiefs took the ball at the lineout and attacked once again making inroads deep into the Worcester defence. But this Worcester defence is made of good solid English Oak, withstanding all that was thrown against it.

Worcester, turned the ball over and replied in big numbers, keeping it really tight around the rucks and mauls. Phase after phase of short stabbing runs from the backrow, mixed liberally with the big boys of the front row union. Tactics were being dictated by the gale force wind blowing straight down the field, into the faces of these precious little forwards from up the M5.

Both sides were defending like their lives depended on it. It was tough, tough rugby. The slightest slip in concentration from either side would have spelt disaster. The big Samoan No6 was already making his enormous frame felt with some crunching tackles. Just ask Gary Trueman?

Slowly but surely Worcester were exerting control. Imperceptible at time but tangible in the air around the defending Chiefs.

For the second game Craig was being challenged at the line. The ball was not coming back in a controlled manner. In came Gabey and Hickey, get the ball in short and fast, control this line.

on 16 Minutes Worcester were awarded a penalty, in a normally easy position. In this wind however nothing was easy. The ball was given to James Brown, who hits a lower faster ball. 3 points no problem

Exeter 0 : 3 Worcester

This galvanised the Exeter players into bigger efforts.

They attacked immediately from the kick off after regaining possession. The ball was run fast at the defending line of NPOWER shirted Warriors. The line held!

Again came the Chiefs, they were not going to give this one up. Phase after phase, yard after yard they made their way inexorably towards the Worcester try line. Finally the ball was worked quickly away from a driving maul into the hands of Tony Yapp who drifted sideways. Offering a sweet half dummy he straightened up and cut through the defence with consummate ease

Exeter 7 : 3 Worcester

The game then ebbed and flowed between the two 22's with both sides showing equal intensity and clear intent to attack.

A great break from the powerful Trueman saw him carve up the Exeter midfield, to set up Chris Garrard for a wonderful try out on the right

Exeter 7 : 8 Worcester

Worcester saw the opportunity and applied the pressure. keep the ball in hand and drive them back towards their own try line. Would they concede the penalty or crack for another 5 pointer.

A penalty it was!

Exeter 7 : 11 Worcester

half time came with the chats of Worcester, Worcester ringing in their ears both teams proudly strode from the field.

It had been a wonderful 44 minutes of intense rugby played by two teams intent on winning. The defence from both teams was well organised and brutal, nothing was being given away.

Worcester had the edge on the scoreboard and definitely on the field. To hold this good Exeter team to 7 points against a howling gale and to score 11 in reply speaks volumes for the professional approach taken by coaches and sticking to the game plan.
