The Paul Westmacot Report The Andy Keast Interview
Daren O'leary had taken a knock during the first half and rather than risk further injury he was replaced by the crowd favourite Duncan "rubber legs" Roke.

Tommy Hayes got the game underway, with a high kick. Chris Evans got there tapped the ball back but straight into the hands of the big No6. He attacked!!

The chasing Warriors soon had him in there claws and ripped the ball away and turned the attention on the Exeter try line. A great series of plays took the warriors to within 5 meters. A handling error allowed saved the Chiefs the embarrassment of conceding a try within a minute of the restart.

Unlucky Worcester!!

The try was saved, the pressure was only lessened. The warriors game back again, keeping the ball in hand, driving deep into the Exeter half once again.

The pressure eventually told as once again Exeter were penalised for handling in the ruck. This cost them 9 points in the day, if you give penalties away Worcester will punish you severely. Time for Tommy Hayes to use his gentle howitzers to place the ball cleanly between the uprights

Exeter 7 : 14 Worcester

Who is this little cherub with his delicate little curls, why it's James Brown after a perm I believe.

Once more the game took on the usual shape of one side attacking the other defending. ball turned over and all change.

For the supporters it was becoming nail bitingly exciting

Worcester Just piled on the pressure. Drive after drive, ruck after ruck. keep the ball in hand and keep them moving backwards. Something eventually gives.

Once again it was handling in the ruck that allowed Worcester to set up another attack with Ben Daly scoring out wide

Exeter 11 : 19 Worcester

The action was fierce and uncompromising as Ben Daly's eye can confirm. A blood replacement bringing on another favourite Chris Hall. Still Ben had done his bit with a fabulous display of pinpoint throwing in awful conditions

Exeter were a side in form and full of confidence, so they were now two score behind, so what. It only takes one score and then you are only one score behind.

It came through there forwards. It was an enormous effort and well orchestrated. They were pummelling the Warriors line, but it was holding firm. We then pulled away, only to be driven back again by their very determined and focussed Chief's pack

Eventually success, the forwards powered over for crowd cheering try

Exeter 14 : 19 Worcester

Worcester came out of the blocks with all guns blazing. It was now time to run the ball, out wide it started to go. Once again Gary Trueman was showing his full worth both in attack and defence.

Disaster, a missed pass a pick-up and off went the big Samoan international. Nothing in front of him but sweet green pastures and the Warriors try line. Gabey pinched his boot and Gavin Pfister got a hand on him. The tackle completed by Brown. Phew, that could easily have been a turning point. But no the cover did it's job and NO SCORE

Worcester, were looking confident but there was nothing in in it. Either side with a score could turn the game.

The first attempt was a drop goal from James Brown. Back to the drawing board James. But it gained territory. Maybe this was the tactic??

The pressure was maintained over the next 7/8 minutes of good strong controlled rugby. This same approach as at Orrell yielded another 2 penalties, 6 Points.

Exeter 14 : 25 Worcester

Exeter certainly did not give up even now. The attacked deep into the Worcester half. But it was going to need two converted tries to win and Worcester were not going to concede that. The game ended with Exeter once again on the attack, but well controlled by the Warriors

Observations:

1.   This was always going to be a tough encounter down at the county ground and so it proved to be.

2.   A first half of focus and concentration as warriors against a gale held the Exeter Chiefs and came in 4 points in the lead.

3.   Good defence on most occasions but some missed tackles for not being in position.

4.   Tony Yapp's try should never have been a missed tackle at center and n backrow cover.

5.   Game plan was played by the book, no panic and it worked. Trust the coaches!!

6.   Craig played well but there seems to be an edge missing. He looks mentally shattered. The next two weeks off could be god send.

7.   Gary Trueman is a tough man taking some big tackles until that final one. Good to see him come off and be replaced, he would have stayed on!

8.   The supporters were in great form once again away from home. The players showing the gratitude.

9.   Now for Bristol at home in 2 weeks time. This could be the day when we, Worcester Rugby Club, are crowned champions of Division 1.

10.   Let us all fill Sixways to the rafters for the last two home games and show OUR appreciation of what these rugby players have done for Worcester. Bring everyone, even your favourite out-laws, to the club. It will be two occasions not to be missed.
