Nicky Goodwin Audio Report The Andy Keast Interview
April the 3rd 2004 was here at last! This building up to be great day. The crowds had been pouring into the stadium from 12:30, the bars were filling up, the atmosphere was full of noise and anticipation.

Could The Warriors clinch the title, could they win their 24th consecutive league game this season and extend the record set two weeks ago down at Exeter.

Andy Keast had stated he did not just want to crawl over the line for the championship, but to storm the threshold in style, his style. Fast running, high risk rugby, if it came off we would all be in for a real treat

Two unsung hero's the quiet thoughtful Don and the fizzing Claire Woodward our gentle Physio, or so the boys say Giant lock Craig Gillies warms up with a simple catch some 14ft in the air. This is where the game is won, practice, practice and practice some more The "Bar Standers" start to oil the pipes with some tasty amber liquid. Looks good enough to drink that Jim, but what on earth have you smelt.

Bristol fans were here in big number bringing along their cuddly toys as well

Both teams spent a good 20 minutes warming up. This after the home crowd had cheered their hero's all around the ground. Made the hands tingle and the heat beat just that little faster. This was our Warriors and we were going to show them how much we supported them.

The determination on both sets of face was testament to the importance of this game for both teams. Could Worcester win the championship, could Bristol spoil the party, how would a young Bristol team measure up the best team in the division

Tommy Hayes re-instated at flyhalf got the game underway with a deep drop-out. Bristol kindly fell into auto pilot, kicked away into touch giving a line out and certain possession to the Warriors just outside the 10 meter line.

The Daly/Gillies double act came up and sweet as a nut the ball was sailing down the backs for the first attack of the day. This was a precursor of events to follow, it was slick and it was fast. We were off and running.

They all looked dangerous as soon as they set off, were we going to get an first minute try.

The answer was no, spoilt by crossing. However the stall was set out and we knew immediately that we were going to see our backs attack and with some flair.

Bristol defended the first thrust and soon managed to get some possession. What would they do, what was their game plan? Clearly it was keep it tight and attacked though their forwards close into the rucks and mauls. In an attempt to draw in the Warriors back row and then throw it wide for their two flyers on the wings. The forwards certainly id their bit and were playing very well keeping it tight and moving forward

Bristol certainly had the better of the game for the next few minutes despite being in their own half. They looked calm and comfortable with ball in hand.

However as soon as it went wide it was a different story. Passing and handling was not upto what was required and put pressure back onto their own backrow

we were now five minutes into the game, Worcester were looking dangerous, Bristol looked in control. Where was the breakdown going to come from. Pressure from the Warriors backrow eventually told when Bristol conceded a very kickable penalty. We were never going to kick it!

Ben Hinshelwood rifled a low ball into touch and the fabled Worcester catch and drive was on the cards.

But remember Bristol had not conceded one at their place so would they here?

The lineout was won, the drive set up but Bristol stopped it once again.

Another lineout, with some pretty impressive interference was once again won and held up.

O.K. go on the fringe and set up another maul and another.

The ball was being picked and driven ever closer to the Bristol line, would we see yet another Gavin Pfister try, well would we?

Answer no once we had committed all the backrow in the ball was spun wide out to Tommy Hayes. He looked to be going wide with Ben Hinshelwood drifting wider stretching and opening the defensive line.

In cam Gary Trueman and a great line and at speed. Unstoppable from the moment he took the ball, with fist in the air he stormed over the line to score the first of some fantastic tries of the afternoon

Worcester 7 : 0 Bristol
