With many Worcester supporters feeling a little delicate
from the previous evening and the game looking decidedly wobbly it was time
to take solace in the famous Penzance Pasty. Min's worried face and full cheek pouches spoke volumes for the rest of us. The home crown in front of the Skinners marquee were in full voice and quite rightly loving every minute. Their team was giving the league leaders a lesson in desire and concentration. |

Penzance got the game underway with a very sloppy kick
straight into touch. Scrum back on the halfway. At last we had an unforced error and in a great position to attack from. WE BLEW IT!! |

Well now it was back to the start of the first half.
Worcester were not even at the races, what on earth was going on. Obviously
the half-time team talk had done nothing to lift the level of focus in the
team. Penzance were not slow in taking advantage in this total capitulation by the Worcester 15. They immediately and one has to say with consummate ease drove the Warriors deep into their own half, running through their defence untouched by human hand |

Within minutes of the restart they had
scored a simple try to go 19 : 14 Up It was time to get this chariot back on the rails on running. Oh no it wasn't said the Penzance team, full of confidence and running, smashing their way yet again through a paper thin defence. Only a massive tackle from Jon Hylton under the post, causing the ball to be knocked forward save a total embarrassment and a 26 : 24 lead. It was now time to ring the changes, on came Gabey, Hickey and Powell and the game changed. |

The ball was now controlled and the intensity lifted to the levels that should have been there at the kick-off. We were now seeing quick ball being well distributed. the midfield continued to punch the holes, only this time there was some support. Mark Gabey put in his longest sprint seen almost going 80 yds to the line. Now the support was there fast and the ball recycled. the handling and running lines were now firing cutting the desperate Penzance defence to shreds. Was this a portent of things to come Penzance 19 : 21 Worcester THE LEAD!!! |

Suddenly it was all change. The Warriors were back in town
and in style. Now the pace lifted, the slumbering giant had finally been awoken. Worcester came on the attack fast and hard. wave after wave of lines breaking through t set up yet another phase of play for the tiring Penzance to defence to cope with. Finally and to much relief the bonus tray came Penzance 19 : 28 Worcester |

Drew Hickey and mark Gabey were setting a fine example for
the rest of the team to follow. It was now time to see the attacking skills of the backs, in particular Jon Hylton and Gary Trueman. Hylton is electric quick and has great sideways body movement. His one attack from absolutely nowhere beating 5 players set up a great passage of play with Tommy Hayed going Over for the try. Penzance 19 : 35 Worcester |

Penzance had not given up, they were but one score away
from a much teraserver bonus point. But we had conceded 11 tries in 3 games,
surely we were not going to leak another!! We shall see. the Penzance team, supporters and WAG's were now being given a first class display in cutting edge rugby. With every sequence the threat was there. The handling now was excellent, the support excellent and the scoring precise. Two more tries quickly scored taking the score to: Penzance 19 : 49 Worcester |

Observations 1. We very nearly blew it!! 2. Overall it was a poor display of defence and support play. 3. There were moments of some sublime play, but bigger and better teams would have put the game well beyond our reach 4. If we are to win the championship, let is act and play like champions right upto the last minute of the last game. We cannot afford to let our byword be sloppiness when we end and start next season. |
5. I would think the coaches got a lot more from the game in their forthcoming decision making. Some players did not do themselves many favours. Whilst others confirmed their true professional status. 6. If we play like that against Exeter and Plymouth then this league s far from over!! 7. However it is 21 out of 21 a great record, played badly and won convincingly. Now it is onto Plymouth at Home and Exeter away. Two very big games where we will need to get maximum support out there and make ourselves heard. Very poor today maybe still hung-over from a great Friday night. Fellow supporters we have to do better for our team!! |

Saturday night in Penzance was great. Good food, good fun and lots of friendly revellers enjoying their evening's entertainment. We even had an invite to get on "The Barn Bus" maybe someone from Penzance could clear the mist and tell us if we must much by refusing said invitation? At last and to much relief to my body the witching hour came and it was time for bed. Oh and a 2 mile walk to the hotel. The following day saw us making our way back home via the "Jamaica Inn" for a quick smugglers pasty. Gary and his stomach. |
To Penzance Rugby Club , many thanks for a fabulous
weekend in Cornwall, we were made gloriously welcome and the beer was
exceptionally cheap with great parties. To Nick the Noisy Pirate, well what can I say but thankyou!! It doe not fully justify what you did for us, I hope your club are grateful for your help. Not only did you look after us on Friday but you were back selling programmes on match day. We wish you all good luck in the future, JP |
