Game No 25 and what a game! Coventry are tough opponents at any time but to play them when they are fighting for their very survival was going to make this a very hard encounter

In recognition of Peter Jackson Lions, England and Coventry Wing, the teams and supporters stood in respectful silence for one minute

Tommy Hayes got the game underway for The Warriors. A good solid catch by Coventry allowed them to secure a good ball. The second thing they did was to drive the ball forward and test out the resolve of the Worcester pack. Well it bent!

Coventry, came away from the first encounter with the bonus point. They shunted the big Worcester forwards  backwards tying in the loose forwards. Slowly they engineered their way further and further up field.

The Worcester forwards were not fired up and seemed to lack cohesion and leadership. Still early days yet.

Worcester were trying to force the pace, to get the ball out wide, before they had taken control of the situation. They were flat and showed no penetration at all.

Coventry took advantage and attacked. After all they had nothing to lose and if Worcester were not upto the task in front of them then why not throw caution to the wind

Even the most dominant player of the league, Craig Gillies, was somewhere else allowing Coventry to take easy ball at the lineout.

Coventry made a good break from the line and with their backrow there first drove the ball towards the Warriors line. This looked ominous. Not because they were dangerous but because Worcester looked asleep and disinterested. They had gone on holiday a day early!!

However, now pride took a hand and The Worcester defence held firm. It then became very much an attacking defence. The big tackles were coming in faster than Coventry could pass the ball, forcing them backwards away from the line and safety

The referee was penalising Worcester for some very strange reasons, still he is the man with the whistle good or bad.

Coventry were quick to take advantage and converted the 4th penalty in a row giving them the first score

Coventry 3 : 0 Worcester

Even though Coventry were in the lead it did not look troublesome. There was nothing outside of the pack to worry about. Very slow and predictable.

The difference in the teams, which is vast, was clearly shown 3 minutes later when The Warriors turned over ball.

It was a great break through the middle from the backrow which was very quickly recycled out to Tommy Hayes who put a great long miss pass out to David Officer, who then released the mercurial Daren O'leary. Daren with a real turn of speed and change of direction left the defence for dead and strode over the line for 5 Points

Coventry 3 : 5 Worcester

From the restart once again Worcester did not secure the ball and the advantage went straight away to Coventry. They kept up the pressure and forced Worcester to concede another kickable penalty

Coventry 6 : 5 Worcester

Worcester responded with power and pace, were they waking up? It was still pretty poor rugby with Worcester fielding 15 centers. There were that many people in the midfield, it became a procession of pedestrian passes that schoolboys could better in their sleep. It was dreadful!!

We were getting plenty of good lineout ball but oh my had we forgotten the game plan, was there a game plan???

We had a comedy at the lineout, or maybe it was a set ploy, whatever it worked. Just lob the ball in when no-one is looking and hope your team get it. Well Coventry did get it. Gaining ground and setting up their flyhalf for the first drop goal of the day

Coventry 9 : 5 Worcester

It was pretty dismal stuff!!

Coventry did not look in the slightest bit dangerous, but Worcester having the lions share of the possession looked clueless themselves in attack. However when they got it right they were unstoppable with Chris Garrard going over for the second unconverted try.

Coventry 9 Worcester 10.

What happened at the restart? The same as the last time. Pressure applied concede penalty and low and behold we're behind again

Coventry 12 : 10 Worcester

Finally the message was getting through and The Warriors started to put some phases together.

Throughout this whole phase of play three men had kept Worcester in the game and were already setting out their stall for man of the match, Tommy Hayes, Drew Hickey and Neil Mason who was having a cracker of a first half.

Neil was the dependable rock on which the Coventry attack floundered and the Warriors attack flourished. Every time in possession he made big yards, immensely powerful and always staying on his feet making the ball available. he was clearly grasping the opportunity and saying, "do not go in the premiership without me!!"

Worcester gradually started to exert more control from the loose play and lineouts. Scrummages were going to Coventry what a gap Neil Lyman leaves.

On 35 minutes we had another cutting edge try down the right hand side which was duly converted by Tommy Hayes. Another penalty immediately conceded by the Warriors and the flukiest drop goal you will ever see, but they are all points no matter how they come.

Half Time

Coventry 18 : 17 The Warriors
