The supporters win the support game, The warriors win the rugby and our man Dennis tests out the beer and assures us all we win that as well. Dennis do a Brainy and give us all a smile!!

One can only imagine what was said during the interval and probably all deserved. I feel sure I saw the birds leaping off the roof of the stand as it rocked to the voice of AK. Week off what week off??

Coventry restarted the game with a long ball deep into Neil Cole's safe hands. It was onto the attack you warriors and show the hundreds of loyal Worcester Supporters what you are really made of.

It did not take long for Andy to upset the fourth official as he was removed from pitch side and asked to stay behind the barriers. Yet very small children were allowed to kick a ball about in the dead ball area. Golden Hat job or what?

Coventry made the first telling attack of the half, a good chip but mis-directed. No score

You have to admit when the chips are really down wear a daft hair do that will lift the spirits!!

Worcester were now playing rugby at speed. We were seeing the real Warriors.

A devastating attack left the Coventry defence in tatters and the scoreline

Coventry 18 : 24 Worcester

The "Neils" were ruling the day. Neil Cole had come out all guns blazing and was setting up the plays with his backrow and Tommy Hayes.

Releasing the runners.

On came James Brown for David Officer, the game got better with Tommy moving to outside center. Ben Hinshelwood now started to make those telling breaks. Try time was on it's way

In the next 15 minutes we saw some delightful attacking rugby. The sheer pace of Jon Hylton, strength and guile of Crystal Mixed with the power and pace of Mason and Hickey it was rugby at it's most glorious 2 converted tries without response

Coventry 18 : 38 Worcester

And then something special! Not from the silken skills of the pretty boys out in the backs but from a man who the whole game had been outstanding, Neil Mason.

The above sequence shows it all, taking a ball on the 10 meter line Neil drove hard into gap just inside the backrow cover. His sheer strength and ferocity saw him brush aside the would be tackles no-one was going to stop this raging bull. He was away in the open.

First jinking to his right to go outside the centers then back again to hand off the final tackle form the fullback

On he strode everyone left for pace and what a great line. He could smell the whitewash of the try line. His muscles were screaming as he ploughed on and over the line under the post for a most magnificent try.

The Worcester fans went wild for one of their most popular sons

"Waggerrrs, Waggerrrs!!"

Coventry 18 : 45 Worcester

That try was a true reward for the way Neil had applied himself throughout the whole game. With Richard Bates sidelined with a hamstring tear this was his chance and boy did he take it!!

It was now all glorious, glorious Worcester. How many more tries could they score. had they played like this from the off just what could the score have been.

Coventry though still tried. Could they get a bonus point. the answer was no! they just did not have anything outside the pack. They are a long way off the capabilities needed to secure their survival in Division 1

With James Brown now inserting that extra bit of pace and movement the Coventry backrow was being run ragged. They looked overweight and cumbersome.

Worcester taking full advantage and piling on the pressure with some wonderful running and handling skills. Neil back oh sorry Gavin Pfister was once again everywhere in support with Drew Hickey always available to take control of any situation.

A converted try was very quickly followed up with the hard earned hat-trick try from the mazy Daren O'leary.

Final Score

Coventry 18 : 57 Worcester

Observations:

1.   Well to put it mildly they had gone on holiday a day too early the first half was not acceptable from a side as good as this

2.   You cannot have 15 centers on the field all trying to pass the ball on, you go nowhere but backwards.

3.   The forwards are there to win the ball and provide it for Neil Cole to use to get the game moving at speed. They put Neil in a terrible situation.

4.   Neil Mason had a terrific game and fully deserves his man of the match award. Anyone though of playing him at prop, he is  strong man who can also run.

5.   The second half was excellent, as good as the first half was bad.

6.   Daren O'Leary seems to have got some pace back he looked really good today along with Jon Hylton who is naturally very fast, defence though???

7.   Drew Hickey and Gavin Pfister had good solid games

8.   Front row seemed to struggle in the tight!

24th Apr we meet Bees who are coming back into some form for their last game of the season. Plymouth struggled to beat them and could easily have lost. The support and the players are going to have to be up for this game from the first whistle to the last!!!

A View From The Supporters Bench!!

By Mike Clarke

A starter for 10. Sung to the words of ‘knees up Mother Brown’. The older amongst you can teach the younger ones.

 ‘We’ve won 25, we’ve won 25, gonna have a party, gonna have a party, When it’s 26’

Well another one in the bag. Rumoured signings all over the place, plus some confirmed. Debentures, People moving seats and a new logo… not sure about the last bit. What a week it’s been.

Off to Cov for what looked like a game that could send them to the basement leagues.

The players were wandering around the ground when we first arrived. Brainey and Keasty were having a cup of coffee/tea together by the refreshment stall. Everyone was in a congratulatory mood.

When the Warriors came out for their warm up they started a lap of honour. Passing the crowd in the posh area they progressed to the end where the Coventry players were going through their routine. The Warriors were heading for the first turf battle of the afternoon. They approached the Coventry players then, under the posts the Warriors changed direction and left the mind games on the edge, passing the Cov players with a wide berth. They jogged passed the cow shed where they were greeted with affection by the crowd; at this point mainly Worcester supporters. Was this to be for the remainder of the afternoon? At the opposite end of the ground they went into their warm up routine. Everyone appeared sharp and up for the challenge.

The players from both teams came onto the pitch for the game. A minutes silence was held for the late Peter Jackson, a Coventry, England and British Lions stalwart of the past.

The game got under way and Worcester, as they did all game threw the ball about. This fact led to some strange decision making as the game wore on. At one point in the first half the ball traversed the field several times but not a yard was made. Coventry were putting in some tremendous work in the tackle zone and Warriors were having to work hard to contain them. It was hard at this point to see why Coventry are in danger of being relegated because from No. 8 to prop they were making some good yardage up front, recycling the ball and spreading it wide. The full back made some useful excursions into the line. Cov are not the biggest side that Warriors have played this season by a long chalk but the Sixways outfit was looking shaky. A free kick for poor scrimmaging and a number of other infringements kept Warriors on the back foot. An easy penalty gave the Coventry outfit an early lead. Worcester came straight back with a fine handling move to score.  3 – 5. Tommy Hayes was playing the simple game plan at this time – kick the ball into the Cov half. Win the line out.

The line out was as safe as houses again. The receiver changes being rung at will. Chris Hall was hitting the jumper a lot better today. Something that has been lacking in his skill set in the few periods he’s played this season. Chris was the most improved player last season and given a lack of injuries surely is worth holding on to for next season.

The early drives were held well by Cov but one suspected the Coventry team to wilt under pressure and lack of stamina in the second half. I didn’t see anything that worried me. The Cov players did want to do well though, and they were doing the ‘in the face’ bit to Worcester, not the other way round

Then 6 – 5 from another penalty. This after Warriors again went to sleep. A number of the players seemed off the pace. Gav and Drew along with the young Neil Mason were getting through a lot of work at the base of the scrum. The backs, at this point were nowhere near as fluent in their handling, or decision making as we saw the previous week. Johnny Hylton showed good pace when he had the ball. Darren O’leary came into the line at opportune moments. Ben was quick. Without Truesey the central partnership didn’t break the gain line as they should. The Cov back line were not good; they tackled well but were not the most expert in anything else.

There was a distinct lack of penetration in the centre. David Officer seemed unable to break through the gain line and the ball broke down in mid-field far too often for comfort. When Officer did try to break the line he was caught in possession which made recycling more difficult than it should have been. The Cov players were going over the ball quite a lot but to be caught in possession as often as Officer was with people to pass to didn’t help.

Eventually the first half ended with Coventry ahead of Worcester. All the Cov points came from the boot. They all count and if the opposing team has a good kicker, and the Cov full back had his boots on today, then you will be punished for mis-demeanours in tour own half. Cov didn’t look like scoring a try at half time but they were steadily putting the points on the board.

Out they came for the second half. Something J must have been said by the coaching team methinks. Worcester started their ‘in your face’ tactics to Cov right from the kick-off. Neil Cole hit the Cov scrum half for only the first time in the game it seemed and put the home team on the back foot. Shortly afterwards some open play saw the ball re-cycled to Cole and he went over for a very good try. He can do it but hasn’t proved to be consistent yet in the small amount of game time he’s had.

Try’s came flooding from now on but again some strange decision making was apparent in the backs. David Officer was subbed. On came James B to take up the stand off position. Tommy moved to outside centre. The ball was moved quicker from now on. People seemed more comfortable in their positions, and with their playing partners.

Neil Mason, who had performed well all game, made a break from just inside the Cov half. He still had a lot to do with 2 players converging on him and a full back in front of him. He beat all comers to touch down a fine try.

I don’t think the result ever seemed in doubt after the first 10 minutes as Coventry were not a good side despite their positional gains early on. However, Wuss didn’t appear to come out of the blocks as fast and as dominantly as they should have. If, next season, Warriors play a team below them and ‘expect’ to win due to recent form they will be turned over. That said the second half proved a major turn around in ability.

It must also be said at this point that the players are coming to the end of a very long season having had lots of expectations placed on them with all the incumbent pressures. They must be feeling mentally drained. Irrespective of the odd criticism you may hear about guys be sure that the supporting element of the club have a great warmth for what you have achieved and want you to continue doing well.

 Now ‘we’ve won 25, we’ve won 25, gonna have a party, gonna have a party, when it’s 26’.
