The Tuts Report The John Brain Interview

the second half got underway with The Saracens smarting and want to show their fans just what they could do. They were going to brush this newly promoted team aside!

They came of like tigers attacking from all angles, but the tight well organised defence did not waver. they tackled like demons knocking them backwards in each tackle.

This was going to be a test of stamina and focus

On they came phase after phase, from one side of the pitch to the other and back again. Would they stretch the defence and find that hole like last week.

Well the lessons have been well learnt! There were no holes the door was firmly slammed shut on every attack. The ferocity of the tackles knocking the ball out of their hands. If only we could have won the scrums as easily

However a wide ball down the right saw Saracens go over the line only to be disallowed and a 5 meter scrum awarded to the attacking side??

The warriors turned on the power yet again and just shunted the Saracen 8 backwards and backwards some more. the ball was rolling about at the base as Neil Cole took the loose ball and the Worcester backrow were there to continue the move. However it just could not be recycled to for a clearance. The ball was forced out of hand and Saracens recovered. they quickly recycled out to the left where Dan Scarborough scored out wide. Unconverted

Saracens 12 : 10 Warriors

All was not lost! But it was Sarries now in the ascendancy. the defence and fitness of the boys in blue was now being tested and they came through with flying colours.

Tim Collier was enormous in every sense of the word He worked and worked and worked, as did everyone else, but he stood head and shoulders above everyone

The game was now getting harder and harder for the Warriors as their fitness was being tested to the limit.

The same was being felt by Sarries as neither side would give way.

Everything was being challenged including the resolve of the supporters and the crowd were loving it.

Charts of Warriors mixed with chants of Sarries rang around the ground as each set of supporters tried to lift their team

You could see the strain on the Warriors, it was time for some substitutions. On came McCloud-Henderson and Thinus Delport.

With Brad adding much need freshness and strength they recovered there composure and started to come back into the game

Even out on their feet they were able to keep their focus and with that their shape. It was work, work, work as a team they defended, as a team they turned over ball, as a team they attacked.

This Worcester Squad is already and TEAM in every sense of the word

There wasn't a player of the field that was not giving it their all. Daly and Collier with Sanderson and Gillies were outstanding.

Pat Sanderson was everywhere making some massive tackles. Leading his team of Warriors from the front.

If this continues we could win this game as The Warriors were now coming back into this half.

then we had another spate of penalties which cost the |Warriors dearly.

2 penalties were converted by Saracens taking the score to

Saracens 16 : 10 Warriors

In between the penalties The warriors had their chance with a long range effort from Tommy Hayes which just went wide of the left hand upright.

Warriors came back and almost took the game when O'Leary was held up 2 meters short. Another long range shot from Hayes skinned the post.

Then almost disaster as Sarries were awarded a penalty 25 meters out. It was missed and the well earned bonus point was saved as the referee blew for full time

Good Bye Sarries.

Thanks for a good game and a great day out

The fans we met are a credit to your club!!
Observations:

1.  There are two things that stand out about this game which must be top of the list. The sheer physical effort and commitment the team gave and the travelling support. You were all fantastic. In fact you were fantasmogorical. Well done!!!

2.  Not all is rosy, we know we have a problem at prop, due to injuries, but nonetheless a problem we will have for the next 3 games at least. The problem is we need to win 2 of those 3 games.

3.  The supporters who came were fantastic but we need to increase our travelling support! The team need the sort of support we took to Orrell, Leeds and Millmoor. If we can do it in Div1 we can most definitely do it in the Zurich Premiership.

4.  The speed to the breakdown was the best I have seen at anytime in this club and we kept it going right up to the last minute of a 90 minute game.

5.  The defence was much improved on last week. the supporting tackles were big, fast and hard very often forcing a spilled ball which we invariably won

6.   Special mention must go to 5 members to start with, James Brown who controlled the game with variations of skill and plays. Pat Sanderson for his leadership and total commitment he was everywhere in attack and defence. Craig Gillies and Ben Daly, under some real physical intimidation still dominated the lines. Ben was like another backrow players his work rate was outstanding.

We then come to the 5th Tim Collier!! A player I stupidly maligned long before he had had the opportunity to play for us. He was outstanding, his work rate, his strength, his desire to win and his skill. He is that missing link we have needed in out front 5. If we could have had him for last year just think what a player he would be now, no, just think what he will become over the next few weeks. Tim you were outstanding and fully deserve your man of the match. And I am a rather foolish individual who should know better.

7.   We also saw much improved performance from Thomas Lombard who now seems to be settling into the team plays well. A strong man on his feet.

8.   Finally Thinus Delport. We saw 15 minutes of what Thinus is capable. He may not be fully fit yet but the calm way he deals with situations on the field, speak volumes for his speed of thought and his tactical brain. He is going to be a real asset when fit enough to start a game.

All in all Sunday 12 Sep was a watershed. It saw us really start to come to terms with the speed, the intensity and the focus needed to compete in the Zurich Premiership.

We are here and we are here to stay!!
