Nicky's' Audio Report The John Brain Interview
With Andy Keast looking in a very determined mood and Big John giving me the evil eye, the mood was set. This was the biggest game ever seen at Sixways. With Nigel Melville trying to raise the dead, we knew this was not going to be for the faint hearted.

Today was the day our ZP credentials would be tested to the full

Both side were utterly focussed in their own particular warm-up routines. Gloucester were 3rd in the table and improving, Worcester were 11th a position that belied their true ability. This was not a David and Goliath encounter.

It is the very first "derby" between these two clubs. Who would win it, because either team were more than capable

The "Cherry and Whites" had come with thousands of their very vocal and loyal fans.

Who would win the battle of the terraces, who would continue to shout and cheer in adversity. The Warriors Supporters were in full voice with cheers of Warriors filling the stadium. I swear I could see the East stand roof buckle!!

RT looked calm as she surveyed the battlefield like a good General. Prepare the ground, know your opposition. We all knew another refreshing article was in the making.

"Cherry Ripe" Oh how appropriate, but would they be plucked from the branches.

Spartacus, laid bare his foes and Bradders, as he goaded the Gloucester fans and lifted the faithful to even greater heights. we are known as The faithful City and for good reason. We will never let you down, so come on you warriors this is YOUR day.

The crowd were cheering and screaming for their teams as McCrae got the game underway with a deep kick into the Warrior's 22. Straight into the arms of the waiting Ben Hinshelwood, thought about running then hit a long ball deep towards the touchline in the Gloucester 10meters. It did not make touch, up went the groans as Gloucester came surging onto the attack. Then we saw what we had come to expect of these Warriors fierce brutal tackling lead by Dale Rasmussen and Pat Sanderson.

For fully 5 minutes Glaws attacked the warriors, but there was no way through as first Fanaloua and then Hazel were smashed to the ground. The ferocity and speed of the defence started to bring rewards as the attack was driven backwards, causing passes to go wild. the warriors were forcing errors, with Sanderson and Hickey there to take and turnover ball.
The cheers of Warriorrs... Warriorrrs, grew louder as the home fans lent their full support to their battling heroes. It worked. We had turned it around or had we. In one fleeting moment a ball found Macrae, in acres of space, took the opportunist path and hit a wobbling flat drop goal. It crept over. Warriors 0 : 3 Gloucester

The noise volume increased. Straight from the restart Worcester took the offensive and attacked through their magnificent back row. Ground was made. The handling errors had all but been eradicated. Possession was being retained and ground made towards the Gloucester try line. The Worcester Line was once again in fine form taking ball after ball.

The adrenalin was pumping as the Warriors attacked every lineout. the referee had to warn the forwards for dangerous play, not letting the jumper get his feet on the ground before driving in. Sadly within 2 minutes it happened again and Tim Collier was despatched for a 10 minute rest. A pity the referee showed utter lack of consistency later in the game, with some very childlike excuses.

The crowd understood and accepted the decision and gave full voice to their support of the Warriors. Now down to 14 men against the 3rd placed team in the Premiership.

The Warriors stood straight, squared their shoulders, they were NOT going to buckle. They were here to win, not survive!!

Andre van Neikerk had got his first start along with Chris Horsman and the front row was solid. With Collier and Gilles applying the power they were also taking control of the scrums with ease.

Sadly Andre took a bad knock to the head and eventually had to retire. On came Ben Daly, there was no let up for the defending Glaws Boys

The focus and commitment paid dividends as a ball squeezed out from a ruck. Tony Windo "pounced" as Tony does, saw no-one in front of him and decided his birthday had come early. Hit the gas and fairly flew across the surface to score a try under the posts. James Brown this time took his time and converted with Ease. we were in the lead against Gloucester

Warriors 7 : 3 Gloucester

The capacity crowd went wild as the Glaws contingent stared in disbelief. We were wining on the terraces

A wounded animal is always dangerous and these Cherry & Whites are no exception. They came storming onto the attack. Now was the time for real men to be counted and in Dale Rasmussen and James Brown we have two giants

Again and again the 10 channel was attacked with some direct running. Each time Dale and James stopped them in their tracks, not once did either man miss a single tackle.

No matter what they tried they could not breakthrough the defensive wall set by the 14 man warriors.

This game is about focus in attack and defence Worcester had it, Gloucester did not. balls were being dropped, passes going to ground or behind advancing players.

The Worcester backrow secured all the loose balls and attacked through Mat Powell, having another great game and James Brown. Both were taking control of the midfield.

10 minutes had gone by and we saw the return of the man mountain Tim Collier and didn't we turn it on in the scrum. Time after time we turned or drove the Gloucester scrum backwards. Never allowing any good ball to get out to their fast talented backs. Horsman was giving his South African opposite number a lesson in scrummaging. He consistently had him on his knees, unfortunately the referee was having eye problems, there can be no other reason, can there??

Worcester were now camped in the Gloucester 22 with attack after attack coming in. The Gloucester defence was strong and well organised. But it was under enormous pressure as it creaked. The chanting was growing louder, could we lift our team to get that extra 1% and break this defence

Attack after attack was raining down on the beleaguered defence as Worcester strove for the break they so richly deserved. Penalties were being kicked into the corner as confidence grew.

The ability to take the ball so easily at the lineout and drive forward seemed the key to unlock this mighty defence. It did not and it held firm!!

We then had a series of penalties awarded to Gloucester some of which were unfathomable. Macrae finally converted one. I feel sure the half would have continued until he got one.

Warriors 7 : Gloucester 6

The home crowd went wild as they cheered their team back to the dressing room, a sight and sound never to be forgotten!!
