The Tuts Report The John Brain Interview
The day had finally arrived!! After 8 months we were about to play in the most significant weekend of premiership rugby ever seen.

Saints supporters had arrived early and set up a blaze of colour in the north stand just behind the posts. This really was going to be a special day at Sixways

The crowd warmed up their vocal chords as both teams came out to thunderous applause. The Warriors getting a standing ovation as they lapped the field of dreams. The excitement, the passion, the anticipation, clearly made our hearts thump that little faster.

Could we win the game, the players were displaying great inner confidence. Not shared by all supporters but then the players knew what they could do.

Both sets of supporters were revelling in the pre-match gathering of supporters, many wishes of good luck from and to opposing supporters. This IS what rugby is all about!!

Thoughts went back to what could have been, the chance missed the mistakes made, but all that was in the past. Today was about achieving a dream, a dream we all shared, supporters, players, coaches. A continued presence in the Premiership.

We all knew the first season would be difficult but the need to win 9 games to survive was unprecedented.

We had lost our first 4 games, showing we were fit enough and could stay the pace but guile and experience were needed. It came on the 5th game along with a big dose of confidence

As the season built players came to the fore, Mat Powell, Chris Horsman, Tim Collier to mention but a few. Special mention must go to two players who have been instrumental in the clubs success this year.

Craig Gillies: the best line out specialist in the premiership taking 28 more lineouts than his nearest rival. Why has he not gone to Canada??

Pat Sanderson: Captain Fantastic, leading his cohorts through the battles game after game leading from the front. An organiser, a thinker, a motivator and above all else a fantastic leader

The "famous" Npowerettes helped to set the scene with a very demure set of routines. Designed to relax and keep the heart rate at normal levels.

On cam the Hound Of The Baskervilles and Maximus.

All was going well until Maximus got upwind and The Hound sensed his powerful presence. The crowed hushed as the slowly circled each other looking for that first opening.

Come on said Rex do you worst I'm ready for you!!

Maximus as the true fighting Warriors spared his life as he allowed him to continue on his way

Now it was the real stuff.

Out came the Saints to a good cheer from all the great Saints supporters.

The music started slow and quiet, building to that moment when the eloquent Bradders screamed THE WORCESTER WARRIORS and the stadium erupted. Cheers, whistles, horns (all 29 inches) uncontrolled passionate chanting of Warriorrrss,,, Warriorrsss.

It was magnificent stuff, the heart raced the adrenalin pumped and JB got us underway.

Taken cleanly by Saints who were thumped backwards by the storming Warriors

The first encounters were very even both in the tight and loose. At the first lineout however it became clear that Worcester were going to be a handful, with Murphy and Hickey taking good balls and Gillies still to come.

Both teams were testing each others resolve at the maul and scrum which was a fairly even contest.

The first set of points going to Northampton with two calmly taken penalties from Shane Drahm. Throughout the game Drahm displayed a wonderful calmness and vision setting up Saints attacks time and time again

With the home side down by 6 points they turned on the power. Relaxing and make big inroads into the mid-field defence.

The Saints line was under siege with the forwards pummelling the defence with some big runs coming in from Van Neikerk and Lyman

A lineout on the right saw a supper take at the back and the ball spun out to the left. A surge from Hinshelwood saw him nearly make it to the line.

The ball was recycled right and another drive set up. Worcester were awarded a scrum. As the ball was heeled Powell was working out the defence and had seen the slightest of holes.

he picked up, dummied the whole defence and cut straight back to the line a solid hand off and he was diving over for the first try of the game

Warriors 7 : 6 Saints

18 minutes gone and already the lead had changed hands. This was what we had all come to see. The crowd were in heaven. Worcester were in the lead and the supporters were going to do everything they could to keep them there

The noise was deafening as Northampton took the restart

the referee immediately awarding a penalty for Cohen taking out Sanderson without the ball.

This gave the control immediately back to the Warriors as once again the line was secured, this time by Pat Sanderson. Having 4 talented jumpers really puts pressure on the opposition.

There was now a spell where Worcester were in possession of the ball but not in control as time and again the ball was last in the tackle or not recycled. Often squirting out of the sides. It was from one of these turnovers that the ball was developed out to the left with Northampton scoring in the corner. Converted by "that" man Drahm

Warriors 7 : 13 Saints

10 minutes went by as the game was played between the two 10 meter lines until Worcester once again built up some momentum.

Attack after attack was now reigning down on the Saints defence the gaps were out wide. But for some pace several tries could have been scored.

The forwards hit half gap after half gap as the closed in on the ultimate prize, try No2 and the lead.

Who was going to break down this defence, side to side the ball went as Saints defended like men possessed

Then a moment of inspiration as Dale Rasmussen picked up at the loose and stormed over to score under the posts

Once again the lead had changed hands as half time with the half time score at:

Warriors 14 : 13 Saints

A Deep breadth and ready to start again
