"The Nicky" Audio Report The Andy Keast Interview
Welcome to Sixways for the third and final contact training game. To day we had the return game against Leinster. How much had we learnt? How much had we improved? More importantly how much had they?

Leinster are a well established regional side who draw from many clubs in their region. They have played together for many years. They have improved since last year and will be fighting for the Celtic League title.

This was going to be a tough test, exactly what JB&AK want. Could our new side compete and hopefully defeat Leinster. We shall see

The New East stand was looking and sounding great even with such a small contingent of supporters. many had gone away for the Bank Holiday weekend or were at Lords supporting Worcestershire.

It was good to see Thinus Delport changed and ready for his first taste of rugby for quite some time. How fit was he, we were about to find out.

The teams were introduced and all reminded that all gate receipts were being donated to the building of the New St Richards Hospice for Children. All monies would be doubled up by that great charitable organisation "The Wooden Spoon"

the two teams came out to great cheers from the 2,000 supporters on a fabulously warm, sunny day.

A quick last minute pep talk by the respective captains and we were all ready for the off.

Leinster got the game underway and soon had the Warriors scrambling to take the ball. A great tackle forcing the Leinster wing into touch.

The line in Dublin had not performed, how would it go today? The answer was very well indeed. Good timing, a massive first lift and Craig Gillies took the ball head and shoulders above anyone else. the ball was fast to Neil Cole, fast ball from Neil and James Brown was off and into his first attack. the ball was quickly cycled wide out to the left with Dale Rasmusen pulling in the defending centers.

A good fast ruck, out to Brown and a great kick out to the far corner with Jon Hylton steaming down

It looked like a try within 5 minutes. The timing was right, the run was right but oh my the hands and focus were not. The ball was spilled and a chance went begging.

Chances at this level are rare and it is imperative every one is converted into points.

Good vision and shows we can do it!

The game now tightened up with both sides fully committed. Once again the Leinster No8 was in fine form, asking some big questions of the Warriors defence. They were equal to it and each time closing down the attack with some tight defence. Leinster were full of attacking moves around the base of the rucks and mauls. each time though the resolute defence was well organised and not once were they penetrated.

The big man to the right, Leon Greef was having a good came with some fabulous tackles and carries. Eventually being my man of the match.

Worcester were applying pressure on the Leinster Defensive line who continued to concede several penalties

After kicking for position and selecting to take scrums, Worcester finally took a shot at goal which James Brown calmly converted. Score 3:0 but so easily could have been 17:0 after missing out on two golden opportunities.

Back came Leinster, through there magnificent backrow. seen above, taking the defence out wide to pass back inside to his open side partner. each time ground was made but most importantly the line was not breached with Henderson and Sanderson cutting off the inside line.

At times the warriors had to defend for 4/5 minutes of constant attacking pressure. Phase after phase of moves and attacks but the wall was safe and the players confident. The defence looks tough to crack and it will have to be!!

On the other hand the Warriors attack was flat, slow and seemed to move without purpose. No body was straightening up the center or coming in at pace on any line of attack. The ball was exceedingly slow from halfback with little benefit.

The forwards were securing good attacking ball and then it died with some slow lobbed passes that were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Neil Cole looked all at sea as to which side his team was attacking, each time having to keep looking 2/3 times before he took the ball and passed. Brown's long passes were slow and more often than not did not fine his man. Was that his fault or that of his inside partner

The first half was coming to a close with both teams coming to grief against some resolute defence. More attacking variations will need to be learnt by both sides if they are to compete in their respective leagues. There is no doubt that this is a big step up from Div 1 and with a relatively new team. the intensity, strength and fitness are there but the sustained attacking pressure needed to wear down a defence is not.

The first half closed with Worcester leading by that single penalty.

Worcester 3 : 0 Leinster
