Tuts' Audio Report   John Brain Interview

And so to the second half!

We were in the game in a big way and looked capable rolling over this vaunted pack from Saracens. Yes they were tough , experienced and lead by a fiery red head but they were not invincible and our boys were finding their Achilles heel again and again. With the old man Tony Windo showing the way. I actually heard he was contemplating flyhalf next week with his chips, his grubbers and his try scoring capabilities. What a man to have in your team??

However it was Saracens who were quickly out of the blocks and set up some attacking pahases.

Firstly drawing in the defending backrow, then sucking in the midfield backs before relkeasing that mercurial Frenchman onto the Warriors last line of defence.

A Superbly timed pass saw him skate over the line as poor old Paris was left in no-man's land

The lead was back with Saracens

Warriors 10 : 17 saracens

Was the writing on the walls, had Saracens found the golden key. Could pat Sanderson gather his forces and come back into it all over again.

The crowd were not anxious, we had seen this three times this year already, we knew they had heart and the fight to come back.

The cheering became louder and more intense as they sought to lift their warriors onto another level of excellence. And it worked.

The power of the Worcester 8 and sheer physicality of the front row was breaking down the Saracens pack. Gradually and precise control Captain Marvel re-grouped and set off for the far shores

But still the Saracens were not beaten every chance to counter they did with speed and precision. they were always dangerous when they had ball in space. So it was cut down that space and hit hard.

Some delightful touches from Nicolas Le Roux were certainly spreading doubt in the minds of the defenders and with the supporting Hickey and Lombard Worcester were also proving to be a dangerous running team.

Both Saracens Wingers and fullback were a handful and had the capacity to hurt at anytime.

But, the time was right and the pressure was on in came the marauding forwards as finally attacking line outs were being secured.

A series of phases and short breaks finally opened up the left hand side as Sanderson put Hickey in at the corner, who in hist last movement stretched for the line and a fantastic try. The crowd went ballistic. Unfortunately the conversion was woefully off target and short.

Worcester 15 : 17 Saracens

Saracens were not going to lie down and let Worcester get back into the lead

However The Warriors thought differently as on the attack the came again. Some wonderful interaction between forwards and backs saw play approaching the Sarries 22 metre line again.

It was time for the player going over the top and stopping release. 3 points are better than 7 But the penalty was awarded

A calm very calm composed Shane Drahm once again hit the target and Worcester were back in the lead

Worcester 18 : 17 Saracens

It was an immediate reaction as Saracens came straight back at Worcester but the defence held.

It was looking good as the crowd even started to sing.

Wrong, never assume anything in this competition.

All was not lost and the crowd knew it.

If you thought it was loud before it suddenly got louder much louder. As the passionate supporters really got behind their heroes once again.

Lineouts were being won. Rucks were being scattered around the field as Worcester took control of the possession AND the territory!!

They knew they could score, the supporters knew, but more importantly Saracens knew they could score. Saracens committed the eternal sin they went into time wasting mode. Wrong action!

Worcester Came at them!!

A great battle between these two all day and Gillies won!!
Stopping release cost 3 points but save yet another 7 pointer
With some sensible well executed back play Saracens once again went over for their 4th and bonus try. Was a tight game going to give 5 points to one side or the other.

The conversion was taken and another two points added to the total.

Warriors 18 : 24 Saracens

IT was not over yet
Off came Horsman with a twisted ankle and on cam man mountain Tevita Tuamepeau
The final push the final try was scored by magic man Tony Windo after Pat Sanderson's try was mysteriously denied

A win, a fantastic win. What a team and what a great set of passionate supporters.

Fortress Sixways Lives

Observations:

  • What fight, what spirit what a team?

  • Noise from supporters built up and by the end of the game was fantastic.

  • Support from the North stand was noticeable by its very low volume. Please take time to train in an open field and some lovely cold Guinness

  • Le Roux looked good on his first start. So long as his own players know what he is doing he will be an excellent addition to the team.

  • We are now starting to see some space for the backs to run into, pace will be important to exploit those half gaps.

Observations:

  • The forwards were outstanding in all departments, however we still lost 2 lineouts in key attacking positions.

  • Simple mistakes are gifting opposition tries, it requires focus from all players at all times.

  • The desire to win for Worcester makes you feel extremely proud to support The Warriors. They are a real team playing and sometimes fighting for each other.

  • We now need to build on this game so that the next club to visit Fortress Sixways tremble at the thought. It is up to us all to continue recruiting new supporters AND looking after each other.
