Tuts' Audio Report   John Brain Interview
The time had come to take on the French once again. Renown for their fierce scrummaging and forward power Montpellier were going to be a hard nut to crack.

With Niekerk injured, Horsman "resting", Collier, Murphy and Horstman also resting it was time to see once again how good our strength in depth really is.

Montpellier are a big, big team. They kicked off as Sixways opened up with chants of Warriors....Warriors

Fast out of the traps came the big boys pressurising the warriors defence into a silly penalty which was duly punished.

Warriors 0 : 3 Montpellier

It was time to defend as Montpellier came onto the attack again and again.

Although Worcester were breaking out from their own 22 with some delightful handling, keeping the ball on the move as they supported each other. Offloading in the tackle has come on a long way from last season.

However much of the good work was undone by some weak tackling in vital situations. This allowed Montpellier to make ground easily into the Worcester 10 meter area. The pressure was maintained on the Warriors defence, it held firm

The warriors backrow was immense in keeping out some promising attacks, with Pat Sanderson and Drew Hickey everywhere.

Montpellier's front row were giving Worcester a good test, which held firmish. However the power coming in from the second row was moving the scrum in to their favour.

It soon became obvious that Montpellier had no answer to Gillies, Sanderson and Hickey in the line. This was where the attacks were going to come from. More and more ball was being taken and Lombard in the center was having a great first quarter. His inside step and straighten up was cutting through the French defence. With Gomersall and Drahm feeding him some great balls to run onto.

the partnership of Lombard and Hinshelwood continues to develop nicely, as an understanding is clearly being developed. Hinshelwood's lines taking some of the defence away allowing Lombard just that little bit of extra space

The pressure from continued possession and keeping the ball alive started to bring dividends.

As the pressure built Montpellier infringed giving Drahm his first points

Warriors 3 : 3 Montpellier

16 minutes in and The Warriors were on the move!

Attack and attack were just a byword as Worcester applied some great creativity to the bludgeoning power they have up front.

The forwards were now well into their stride, as they grew in confidence they attacked the drive like hungry beasts. Driving it backwards deep into the visitors territory.

The ball was moved left, reset them moved right with an overlap that was not used quickly enough a simple chance went begging

But it was a matter of turning over a scrummage and getting the ball moving again. Drawing in the midfield defence and spinning it wide for Drahm to cut back inside and score a cracker just to the left of the post.

he then calmly converted his own try taking the score to

Warriors 10 : 3 Montpellier

Back came Montpellier with some incisive running through a sometimes flimsy midfield defence, which seemed to take and age to get up to their opposite numbers
Scrummages were set up just short of the Worcester try line as Montpellier pressed for the equalizing points.

Their No8 was exceptionally strong as he held off defenders time and time again. But the defence held

Finally it took a midfield break from a Montpellier prop to crack the nut.

This set up a quick attacking sequence which eventually took the score to

Warriors 10 : 10 Montpellier

The tension was mounting in a pulsating game

Once again it was time for Thomas to rip through the defenders as again and again he created holes at will.

Not only was he punching through but he was also releasing the ball for the backrow to carry on making ground. Using Gomersall to get the backs moving through Shane Drahm

Finally Worcester broke the deadlock after 34 minutes with an unconverted try.

This however was not the end of the scoring in this half. During the next 10 minutes of total commitment from both teams another 12 points were scored

First Montpellier drew level with a try but missed the conversion. Followed by a penalty try conceded after enormous pressure applied at the scrummage by the wonderful Worcester forwards

Half-time score

Warriors 22: 15 Montpellier
