Before the main event got underway we had the U21 Taking on Orrell's 2nd XV.
The forwards at times were under enormous pressure, the speed and skill in the backs gave Worcester the well deserved win 34 : 13 |

We were back at Sixways with almost a full 22 fully fit first choice players, still absent were, Ben Hinshelwood, Gavin Pfister and Duncan Roke. As Ben returns from OZ this weekend, it is expected the coaches will have a fully fit 33 squad to select from. The problem then comes with, who on earth do you have to leave out.
6 of the starting 15 were coming back from injury, some had been out for over 6 weeks, it was the first time this season this 15 had ever played together. Would this tell? The answer was yes, but it hardly had an effect on the result |
|
| It was good to see the dynamic Richard Bates back on the field in The Warriors colours again.
After an awful injury hit season last year this seemed to be going the same way. Now it was time for him to show just what the Sixways crowd had been missing |

The massed supporters did not have to wait long. An attacking series of drives had taken the warriors deep into the Henley half, the ball was recycled at electric speed, out down the line and there was Richard wide on the right, he sprinted in beating the cover for the first points after just 45 seconds Warriors 5 : 0 Henley |

Worcester were intent on playing fast intense rugby, quickly moving from phase to phase, mixing the lines from forward power to back speed and guile. The handling was sumptuous! It was attack after attack with Gary Trueman creating havoc in the Henley defence, this guy has been out for 4 weeks, you would never have known it. Drew Hickey once again was orchestrating everything in the forwards, with Lee Fortey playing absolutely fabulous rugby. Lee has really benefited from a move to a fully professional club, he is fit, strong and mobile. His ball handling in the first 5 minutes was superb

On 7 minutes, the defensive wall finally cracked and Chris Garrard stormed over for his first league try of the season, following his try last week in the cup. The backrow of Mason. Hickey and Bates were having a great game, Hickey with his tackling and linking skills, Waggers with his powerful running carrying all before him and Richard with his speed and strength at the rucks and mauls |

You could call this the terrible trio. From left to right, Hickey, Waggers and Brownie, any one of these could have been man of the match. Once again James Brown was in good form but not quite what we have had over the last 4 games |

Craig Gillies was once again in commanding form in the lineout and Big Ben Daly was spot on with his throwing the whole game. The back of the line predominantly taken by Drew Hickey but changes were rung to ensure Henley were always trying to second guess where the ball was going. The signals were right and the timing was perfect. Ben Daly along with Lee Fortey and Neil Mason were putting in some massive hits when Henley were in possession. Whenever they gained possession, Henley were on the attack and did it with some fine well organised phases. Henley are a big side who are more than capable of playing some fast adventurous rugby. They will do well this season! |
|
However all the danger was coming from The Warriors!The rugby was utterly compelling in it's execution, speed and effect on the game. Brown was setting up his players with space to show their paces, Trueman and Hayes were linking well, cutting through the Henley defensive line at will. With Daren O'Leary and Wes Davies the springboards. The crowd were in full voice when once again a penalty gave Worcester a 5 meter line out. The ball was taken at the back and the drive set up. Once again the sheer power and movement of the Warriors pack was too much for yet another side. Tony Windo scores for Warriors 19 : 0 Henley 20 minutes |

Henley then came back onto the attack and in some style, causing The warriors to conceded two penalties. The a moment of sheer magic, Gary Trueman made a break through the middle. With two defenders coming in to tackle he slipped a beautiful ball to Tommy Hayes coming at speed, TRY. Tommy's first for the club 33 minutes. |
|
For the next 7 minutes it was nip and tuck with first Worcester gaining ground only to lose the ball rather diffidently and Henley taking every opportunity to attack. This is where the missing game time was missed. There were times when the ball carrier was left isolated, this had to be sorted before the game lost it's shape. there seemed to be just one too many handling moves attempted, over complicating the game. |
However execution during a game will bring massive benefits through the season Just before half time Henley once again on the attack forced Worcester to concede yet another penalty. Up stepped Reeves to convert his third kick of the game The half ended with: Warriors 26 : 9 Henley |

| THE SECOND HALF ACTION | |||

During half time Duncan Roke presented the Under 10's with their winning trophy. Which was dropped in the pass (No change there then) |

Worcester were out of the block like raging bulls, hammering backwards the Henley forwards. The line was begging, the first thrust was repulsed, the second was. Then Drew (Carlos) Hickey reversed pass between his legs for Henley to intercept and run 100m to score in the corner Warriors 26 : 14 Henley |

This was not the end 3 minutes later a fine attacking move starting on the halfway line culminated in a great try for Henley. Once again unconverted Warriors 26 : 19 Henley |
||
![]() |
The ball seemed to be slowing down between forwards and backs. Mat Powell had had 4 superb games but a change was now needed before the skills of Trueman, Hayes and Co was wasted |

|
![]() |
On the bench was the returning Werner Swanepoel, it was time NOW! On came Werner and the game changed. Immediately there was more purpose and speed about the ball. Forwards were going in harder and there faster. backs were taking the right lines along with the right attacking options. Alongside Werner's return was Christian Evans who had come on at the interval, giving Richard and Chris 40 minutes each. The game had stepped up another gear. |

15 minutes into the second half and the warriors penetrate the solid Henley defence. With another great try from the electric Gary Trueman. After only 4 playing games has beaten his last year's try tally. Mr calm converting for Warriors 33 : 19 Henley |

With 25 left on the clock could the warriors score another try or two, could Henley keep them out, in fact could Henley score 1/2 themselves. They had shown that they can take the chance when it comes. With the little general on the field, the players were now melding together into one cohesive attacking unit. Confidence was oozing out of every pore. Worcester were going to attack, attack and attack again. The first try going to the fizzing Wes Davies when the referee played a great advantage from a very unlikely situation. Warriors 38 : 19 Henley 64 Minutes |

Next in line was Daren O'Leary who was having a fine game at fullback, he was taking some great attacking lines, if he only had another yard of pace? 68 Minutes Next up was Mr 200% the powerful Mark Gabey on to replace Dan Zaltsman: 72 Minutes Followed by a great try from Jon Hylton who took a flicked ball from Daren O'Leary and just creamed the defence on 78 Minutes Warriors 59 : 19 Henley |

It seemed the job had been done! However this team must learn to play right upto the last whistle. The game was won but you have to come off the field in the ascendancy not after giving away another soft try. |

|
The last word going to Henley who never gave up all day. Once again they attacked at speed through the middle and then sped the ball wide screaming into the Worcester 22 Finally forcing the ball over in the corner Warriors 59 : 24 Henley |

| MATCH OBSERVATIONS | |||
1. Good to see an almost fully fit squad to choose from, the skill level on the bench was pretty impressive 2. You could see that this team had never played a game together this season. Trained yes, but actually played under pressure no. 3. The ability of this team knows no bounds, it is all starting to come together. There were passages of play where it looked almost telepathic where players knew the supporting player would be. The Trueman try being exactly that, straight off the training field. 4. Daren O'Leary played his best game yet, however Crystal still seems off colour. 5. Lee Fortey played a really good game. He has developed massively since having the benefit of full time coaching with John and Andy |
6. The forwards continue to impress with their ability to catch and drive over a try with ease. An essential weapon to have in our armoury 7. In Drew Hickey and Werner we have two thinking players, both good motivators and leaders 8. The whole front five are now playing well as a unit with the addition of Daly and Fortey this unit is capable of taking on any pack in this division. With the sidestepping Lyman coming back what a three to have in your match day 22 9. Gary Trueman is back fit and looks more dangerous now than before his injury. 10. In the super cool Tommy Hayes we have a diamond, who oozes professional confidence in all he does. Where now does Ben Hinshelwood fit in?? |
||
Well with The Bees loss at Orrell, the fact that now have 3 extra games to fit in the pressure is really on. We need to carry on winning and that means supporting out team especially if the game is a tough one. Remember other teams have to beat US, we are the ones commanding respect, it is no use trying to hold us. So long as we will not be beaten we have a great opportunity. NEVER NEVER lose!!! |
