Before the game started a photo call with Wes Davies and his uncle.
Probably the most famous Rugby League player of all time.
BILLY BOSTON |
 |
 |
On a bitterly cold Saturday afternoon, both teams were out warming up, they needed to.
Ideal weather for torn muscles and ligaments if not prepared properly.
The crowds start to gather for the last home game before Christmas. |
 |
 |
The teams get into their familiar huddles, but what has happened to the Pirates' backs have they been shut out of this little group.
This was going to be a game of re-establishing scoring after the rain affected game last weekend at Bristol |
 |
 |
 |
Once again James Brown got the game started, with Craig Gillies, Drew Hickey and Neil "Waggers" Mason out of the starting blocks like a set of 100 meter sprinters
The ball was very well taken by Penzance who were immediately on the attack running the ball straight back at the Warriors. An early wake-up call!! |
Penzance moved the ball well and at speed only for a great tackle from Waggers putting the player into touch.
The first lineout to Worcester, up came "snake hips" Daly and not straight! Well we need to cut that out and he did.
This was the only line not taken all day! |
 |
Worcester started to take control of the early encounters, spreading the ball wide.
James Brown once again was calling the shots with his short passes, mixed with chips and some magnificent long miss passes.
But you have to say it did not look quick for a dry day?? |
 |
Penzance were not overawed by this Warriors team and it's reputation, which count for nothing unless you live upto it. |
 |
Penzance took advantage of some silly mistakes and came at the warriors showing some great creativity, stretching the defenders in both directions.
Worcester then conceded a penalty on 4 minutes which was duly converted by Scrivener |
 |
 |
That was all these Warriors needed to spark them into some fantastic rugby.
It all started from turnover ball, a set of phases from the attacking forward culminated in a 5 Meter Line out.
Would it be a Bristol or an Exeter result? |
 |
Well the ball was sublimely taken by Craig Gillies, what a season he is having.
The maul set and on you go boys. Twisting and turning being forced inside and then Hickey took the ball at the back and went back to the outside and drove over for the first of another 7 forward tries |
 |
 |
 |
Whatever might be said about the Warriors play, when you have this weapon in your armoury what a confidence booster it is to the team and the supporters.
The difference is 2/3 years continuity of the same players being coached by the same coach. It is significant! It was now full steam ahead, with the power of the forwards liberally sprinkled with some rapier like thrusts from the fizzing threequarters that were cutting through the Penzance defensive line.
But it was not a cake walk Penzance are a physical side and tackle extremely hard The second try went Neil Mason who once again showing how good a young player he is, with a massive physical presence |
 |
 |
 |
We were all waiting for that first moment when the crowd favourite Duncan Roke would make his first attack.
When it came it was straight out of the top drawer. Scything through the Penzance defence, showing a growing physical power, set up Wes Davies for the first of his 3 tries sadly Duncan sustained an injury to his knee and was eventually forced to leave the field.
Warriors 19 : 3 Penzance
Then it was straight back to the forwards to score the bonus try and who better than captain Fantastic Tony Windo to come up with goods after yet another forward drive
Warriors 24 : 3 Penzance |
 |
At the beginning of the season the restarts were a shambles, as we score many points it was necessary to sort this area out.
I have to say after the last 4 games it is purring away like a 12 cylinder Ferrari. Craig Gillies and drew Hickey are dominating with some fabulous catches
Although the forwards were doing the majority of the scoring, the backs were also having a good game especially Brown, Hayes and Davies who looked especially dangerous every time they had the ball.
Ben Hinshelwood back in the center made some strong runs but it is going to take time for him to reach the heights of last year's campaign |
 |
 |
 |
In the last 12 months Ben has played very little rugby and now needs game time to re-establish his prowess. The first half was not yet over.
It was once again time for the giants of the game to take over. Another 5 meter line out on the far side of the pitch, once again saw the forwards set up a great drive for the finally Richard Bates to be rewarded for his efforts with a try.
Duly converted by Tommy Hayes Half Time Scores as below

| SECOND HALF |
 |
As the afternoon got colder Penzance kicked off into a confident bubbling Warriors team.
It was all expectancy, we had had 40 minutes, could we have a second 40 of the same intensity, could it get better??
The answer was yes it could and it did, stepping another level of pace and intensity.
On had come the young and dynamic Matt Evans. He is fast, powerful with a quick brain.
He set the target for some massive surges into the Penzance defence. But once again he was left isolated and the ball turned over.
With Worcester in attack mode they were unable to stop a rather soft try
Warriors 33 : 10 Pirates |
 |
 |
 |
The try was well deserved, but what it did, was to re-ignite the fires.
The Warriors came back with such massive power and speed, the game had taken another turn.
They were playing now at real speed, not just driving over but moving the ball from the ruck to running players coming in at speed.
The game was now visibly faster, would the Pirates be able to lift their game to stay with this level of intensity. The answer was no not quite! This left Matt Evans the gate to hammer his way through for the 6th try
Warriors 40 : 10 Pirates |
It was now time for some changes over the next 5 minutes several players were substituted and on came Trueman and the returning Chris Hall.
The game just got faster again. Gary provides that cutting edge of pace in the center and Hayes moved to fly-half, having a very good game getting his backs moving with purpose and creativity |
 |
The forwards were now in total control of the game, Penzance gave them some problems but the control was there for all to see.
We were then treated to another two driven over tries with Tony Windo and Neil Mason collecting their second tries of the game Warriors 52 : 10 Penzance
Then disaster, found I had brought the wrong memory card and ran out of pictures!!! |
 |
The game, however, continued, no sense or propriety these rugby players.
It was now time for the threequarters to really show their paces. The attacking skills on show were incredible, the speed these player pass and interchange is a delight to watch.
With players like Hickey and Matt Evans creating the links within the moves leaves you wondering just what is this team potentially capable of?
The next try was the second of his three tries from Wes Davies. Fully 25 meters out he took the ball wide on the left, accelerated past the first line, twisted away from the second and then just burst his way through the third to score a fabulous try which had the crowd on their feet.
The next was a fully deserved try from the finisher supreme Daren O'Leary. He was having a great game, he was turning the defence inside out every time he received the ball. However from some of his passes you can see why he is a winger.
Nonetheless he was causing all sorts of doubts in the minds of the defenders giving that little bit of space for others to exploit.
Finally he scored a try and didn't he enjoy it. |
The half was all Worcester as The Prates started to tire, they did not however give up!!.
Tommy Hayes, Gary Trueman and Ben Hinshelwood were now running at the Penzance defence with purpose and just that extra bit of time to be more creative.
Then the try of the afternoon from Wes Davies.
Just inside the Penzance 10 meter line he received a ball after coming off his wing into the midfield. He took of like Duncan Roke, twisting and turning showing enormous strength on the ball. It was this strength and instant acceleration which allowed him to keep going. Forcing his way through, he then accelerated the final 10 Meters to score a great individual try under the posts.
There was not a single person sat on their seats.
If the game had to end then end now, but no another minute of time to go with at least 4 minutes of injury time to come. The referee brought the game to a close some 2 minutes early but another good victory for the Warriors
Worcester Warriors 71 : 10 Penzance Pirates |
| OBSERVATIONS |
1. As has been said over the last 3/4 weeks this team is getting better by the game and today was no exception. It is now a team that plays fully 80 minutes of sustained 15 man rugby.
2. The three seasons John Brain has been here is now starting bear fruit. He had a tough first season but with players he had not recruited. Since then he and his players have got better and better.
3. The team can now change from one game plan to another and back again at will, that comes from confidence of the players around you, knowing they will always be in the right place at the right time.
4. If we thought the second half against Orrell was good rugby, it now pales in comparison with what we have been treated to since.
5. Matt Evans is a player of enormous potential anywhere in the backrow. He must be encouraged to continue to show his attacking flair but taught what to do if other players cannot keep up with him.
6. Neil Mason another 21 year old who is now showing just what is in store for us as supporters. |
7. How do you choose between Brown and Hayes, they are both very talented fly halves. Brown brings his backs in on the advantage line where Hayes brings them in just before, both have their advantages depending on the team you are playing.
8. The forwards once again showed just what they are capable of. Last weeks hic-up was just that. Gone and forgotten.
9. Daren O'Leary is showing what a clever player he really is a very good game today.
10. Jon Hylton forced to come on early for the injured Roke, but didn't he have a good game. Fast and elusive in attack and made two great covering tackles, showing again what a great asset true pace is.
Now onto Sharman's Cross and a meeting against our second team. they will be up for it as will their supporters. We have to go there in force takeover the touchline early and dominate the support for the whole afternoon.
Go by coach, car, horse and trap but be there and cheer on the Warriors for our last away game before Christmas |
