The Day a Man Accidentally Became Mayor of Bideford It started, as many strange Bideford tales do, with a pasty, a pint, and a misplaced email.
Local builder Dave Penrose — 58, loves darts, allergic to pigeons — thought he was signing up to help with traffic marshalling for Bideford’s annual sausage roll festival. What he actually clicked was a nomination form for the upcoming town council elections. Nobody noticed.
There was a low turnout. And Dave, the only name on the ballot in his ward, won unopposed. He found out when a woman from the council knocked on his door with a chain and a clipboard, asking what size robe he wanted for the mayoral parade.
To his credit, Dave took the role seriously. He cut the ribbon at a new Co-op, gave a speech at a wedding he wasn’t invited to, and once attempted to ban seagulls from the town centre “on moral grounds.”
His proudest act as mayor? Organising a pancake race where the finish line was a Lidl car park. His lowest? Getting locked in the loos at the town hall for three hours during a planning meeting.
After one glorious year, Dave stepped down, citing “pavement fatigue” and a desire to spend more time shouting at the radio.
He remains Bideford’s most accidentally beloved mayor — and if you ask him nicely at the pub, he’ll show you the ceremonial spoon he borrowed and forgot to give back. |
